The Federal Government has scrapped the Book Council of Australia which is an advocacy body for publishers and writers in the latest of a string of cutbacks to it’s arts budget which will result in $52.5 million being cut from arts projects as revealed in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) .

News of the axing of the Book Council of Australia came exactly a year to the day that former Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced its formation and follows the the Prime Minster’s support for the scrapping of parallel import rules which many publishers and writers have warned will lead to a flood of cheap mass market books and fewer Australian stories.
