Are AI-Generated Books Sabotaging the Publishing Industry?

Writerful Books, 24 August 202313 December 2023

The rise of AI-generated books. Should you use ChatGPT to write a book?

In this series, we look at how AI technology is revolutionizing the publishing industry, raising both concerns and excitement among authors and book editors alike. There is no denying that the industry is changing, with technology allowing for automated processes, more efficient reviews, revisions and reports bringing with it increased speed and productivity which presents both danger and opportunity. In the spirit of full disclosure, some of the following article was assisted by ChatGPT while researching authors who use ChatGPT to write books.

The book world is under siege from an unexpected enemy: artificial intelligence. A flood of AI-generated books is sabotaging Amazon and poisoning the broader publishing ecosystem.

On Amazon, searches increasingly yield shoddy AI-produced titles stuffed with misinformation and leaden prose. Authors like Jane Friedman have even found fake books attributed to them, likely created by AI text generators. When Friedman protested, Amazon absurdly responded that it could only help if she had trademarked her own name.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Across genres from travel guides to self-help, AI programs are spamming platforms with computer-generated content. Often readers can’t easily separate the AI dross from quality human-written works.

Meanwhile, developers drawing on published books to train AI systems have raised alarms. The database Prosecraft, which analyzed books’ language, recently shut down after authors feared their words would improperly end up feeding algorithms.

As AI-generated pseudo-books spread, they could irrevocably corrupt the datasets used to develop language models. Studies suggest models trained on too much AI-created text will deteriorate in quality or even “collapse.”

For authors, the stakes are existential. If AI can churn out passable books with little human effort, what does that mean for writers’ livelihoods? While AI may never fully replicate human creativity, its rapid advances pose an undeniable disruption.

Platforms like Amazon must establish stronger safeguards, or risk driving away legions of authors and readers. And regulators may need to step in with protections against AI generative models pilfering copyrighted source material.

Yet AI also holds promise as a tool for authors, if wisely applied. Programs that suggest plot points or grammar fixes could augment writers’ skills. And services offering thoughtful human feedback on manuscripts, like Writerful Books, can develop talents no algorithm can match.

With ethical limits and oversight, AI and people can collaborate to reach new literary heights. But if left unchecked, AI risks undermining the unique voices and identities that make books worth reading. The writing is on the wall: publishing must evolve to survive this machine learning onslaught.
