Faith-Based Beta Reading: Getting Christian Representation Right

Writerful Books, 26 April 202314 July 2026

Sensitivity readers ensure that your book is culturally sensitive and respectful while avoiding harmful stereotypes or offensive language.

For years, this page described a sensitivity reading service built around the industry-standard model: readers checking manuscripts against a growing list of identity categories, largely to protect a book from online backlash. We offered that service in good faith for a long time.

We don’t anymore, and we want to be upfront about why.

What we offer now is faith-based beta reading. The difference isn’t cosmetic. A faith-based beta reader isn’t checking your manuscript against a cultural checklist. They’re reading as a fellow believer, asking whether your portrayal of faith, doubt, sin, grace, church life, or a character’s spiritual journey rings true. Did you get the theology right? Would a pastor wince at that scene? Does your prodigal-son subplot actually understand what repentance costs, or does it wrap up too easily? Would a reader from a different denominational background feel respected even where they’d disagree with you?

That’s a different kind of scrutiny than the one this page used to describe, and we think it’s a far more useful one for the authors we work with now. If you’re writing Christian fiction or Christian non-fiction and want a reader who understands the tradition you’re writing from, this is that service.

What is a Faith-Based Beta Reader?

A faith-based beta reader is typically a qualified individual that comes from a particular community. It is their job to review a manuscript to ensure any cultural or social elements of the story are portrayed accurately and without offensive or damaging language, narratives, or stereotypes. Not only do they educate and inform authors of acceptable language and social conventions, they also offer an insight on how a particular story may be received by readers from a certain community.

Publishing executives have emphasized the significance of using authenticity readers as part of the editorial process. Authenticity readers have become an essential part of the publishing process, especially when dealing with marginalized communities. By hiring a authenticity reader, authors can avoid damaging misrepresentations and inaccuracies to avoid negative feedback after the book has been published.

Nina Moreno, an assistant editor at Scholastic Press, explains the importance of hiring an authenticity reader this way: It is important to have an outsider vetted perspective on stories that reference or involve different cultures or marginalized characters. Having someone look over a manuscript helps prevent miscommunications and potential bias that an author may have unknowingly put into the text.

In the age of social media, tone-deafness and offensive representation can often lead to negative backlash and a loss of readers. Integrating faith-based beta reader services into the editing process can help authors avoid these pitfalls. Authenticity reading became mainstream following the publication of American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins in 2020 which caused heated debate on social media.

It’s worth noting that authenticity who are commonly referred to as sensitivity readers are not meant to be a replacement for genuine representation in writing by marginalized identities. hiring faith-based beta readers is a good step, it’s not the ultimate solution. A better solution is hiring diverse writers to create more inclusive books. However, faith-based beta readers remain a critical addition to editorial teams and can make a significant impact in improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in literature.

According to Juno Dawson at The Guardian; There is a bigger issue under the surface of all this. We wouldn’t need external editors if the in-house teams at UK publishers were more diverse. I have loved working with every single one of them, but the six UK editors I’ve had since 2011 have all been cisgender white women from (I’m guessing) quite comfortable backgrounds. Their big bosses, almost exclusively, have been cisgender white men.

For authors who want to reach readers from a variety of cultures and backgrounds, the need to review manuscripts for cultural accuracy and avoid the potential for causing offense is paramount. Hiring a faith-based beta reader is an increasingly essential step in the publishing process. As Jacqueline Woodson, National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, states, The most important part of sensitivity reading is celebrating difference and all of the cultures, experiences, points of view — and conflicts — that come with it.

Why Hire a Faith-Based Beta Reader?

Faith-based beta readers play a vital role in ensuring that stories accurately represent marginalized identities and avoid harmful stereotypes or language. By investing in such readers for their manuscripts, authors can avoid backlash and create books that are more inclusive and culturally respectful. It also must be emphasised that we have no interest in censoring or santising any author’s work but pointing out areas that need to be reconsidered so as not to cause offense to ensure their stories are more accessible and inclusive.
